About Rutherfordton, North Carolina
Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Rutherfordton is one of the oldest towns in Western North Carolina. Established in 1787, it serves as the county seat of Rutherford County and has been an important center for government, commerce, and community life for more than two centuries.
Remarkably, Rutherfordton was founded before the U.S. Constitution was fully in effect and before George Washington took office as America’s first president.
The town was named in honor of Griffith Rutherford, a Revolutionary War general whose leadership helped shape early North Carolina. Before Rutherfordton was established, the county seat was located nearby at Gilbert Town.
In 1787, officials selected higher ground along Cleghorn Creek for the new courthouse, creating the community that continues to thrive today.
During the early 1800s, Rutherfordton became one of North Carolina’s most important commercial towns. Travelers heading west often stopped here, and the town quickly developed into a center for business, trade, and government in the foothills.
